Sharing is Scaring!

Hello!

So, I really wanted to write more posts for the spooky month, but I’ve just been cooped up with long hours at work and… yeah.  But I’m here now to contribute to Spooktober with another post, a much more personal one.  This time, I’d like to share with you a personal story regarding an event that was unexplainable at the time.  Perhaps it could’ve been my imagination, or perhaps not.  Yet, we can all agree that the scariest stories are more than often true ones.

You can also share your own creepy encounters in the comments below.  Now, let me share with you a creepy experience from my childhood.

When this happened, I was probably around 11 years old or so.  At the time, we had a family desktop computer, and it was situated so that the door to the hallway was to one’s left.  Right across the hallway was my parent’s room.  It was in the late afternoon (so it was brightly lit) and I was playing a game called Feeding Frenzy (an absolutely fun and addictive game, raise your hand if you’ve played it!), and was stuck on a very difficult level.

Numerous attempts at passing this level got me frustrated and impatient that I was ‘raging’.  I’d swear at the screen (particularly the orca that kept swallowing me up), was very close to damaging either the mouse or keyboard because I was having a temper tantrum.

All of a sudden, I saw something–or rather someone–from the corner of my eye.  It came from my parent’s room and went down the hallway.  It couldn’t have been either of my parents because my mother was at work and my father was watching TV in the lounge.  Also, no human (not even Usain Bolt) could have moved as fast as this thing did.  Though, no matter how fast it moved, I could still remember clearly what I saw.

It was a tall, humanoid figure that looked like a solid, jet black shadow.  I couldn’t make out any facial features, but I remembered it wore a wide-brimmed hat and either a cape or a coat that looked tattered at the bottom.  This thing didn’t even walk or run–it looked like it was floating at least a foot (or roughly 30cm) above the floor.

A cold sensation went through me when I saw it.  I got out of the game, logged off, and sat there trying to comprehend I had just seen.  Eventually, I chalked it down to eyestrain because I spent too much time on the computer, but the spectacle I saw still disturbed me.

Many years later, I randomly remembered that incident, and decided to type into Google “Shadow hat man”.  As it turns out, I wasn’t the only one to see this.  There have been numerous accounts detailing this dark entity, and according to the internet, this thing is apparently malignant (yikes!).  To this day, I’m still not really sure if I really saw this legit Hat Man or if it was just my mind playing tricks on me.

All I know is, I never want to see it again.
